World Renowned Ear Reconstruction Surgeon Heralds New Technique
Dr. Jones announces the return of an inspirational young girl who has undergone an innovative new ear reconstruction technique.
Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones, a pioneer in ear reconstruction surgery, announced today the development of a medical technique called “integration” that will continue to bring stability and assuredness to a 14-year-old girl suffering from a rare physical deformity. Danielle Pass met with Dr. Jones a decade ago at the age of 4. Although she was too young to realize it, her ear was misshapen and underdeveloped. She suffered from a congenital deformity called Microtia, a rare medical condition that occurs in about 1 out of every 8,000-10,000 births.
Worried for their child’s wellbeing, Pass’s parents sought out Dr. Jones for help. Dr. Jones performed a staged reconstruction for microtia, and when Danielle emerged from ear surgery, it was if she never suffered from any kind of physical ear deformity at all.
“I couldn’t imagine a more bright, caring, and intelligent little girl to help,” Dr. Jones, the Atlanta plastic surgery expert said. “I got into medicine to help people, but Danielle wound up helping me. After performing the surgery she has grown into a fine young woman with confidence boiling just below the surface. And, in the process she inspired me to continue to do what I do. This procedure works, and it’s evident with one look at her. I am proud to be a part of her surgery a decade ago and now her touchup. It’s amazing to see how people grow and change when they are accepted into their community.”
After 10 years, Dr. Jones is celebrating her return. Pass, a vibrant, healthy young woman who is proud of her ear and eager to model it for others, is returning for some touch ups. Now in her teens, it is time for the elevation stage of the surgery. Dr. Jones intends to implement a new technique he developed based on some engineering principles he recently studied and discussed with three in-house engineers. The procedure he dubbed “integration” essentially integrates the ear reconstruction into the rest of the facial asymmetry. Ultimately, it allows doctors to make a thinner, more realistic ear when they carve the ear cartilage graft, Dr. Jones said. When finished, nobody will ever be the wiser of her once physical deformity.
